MacBros,
Check out this plugin: http://zahlenzerkleinerer.de/85/ping-version-02.html

It lets you test your pings to see if any are taking too long. Use it to test your pings and then disable it. It messes with your valid code (try validating your markup with it off and then with it on).

Try taking everything out of the Update Services field under admin -> options -> writing and see if your timeouts go away.

A lot of the ping services are bogged down and very slow.

Mark, I run my own server so don't need ftp, I deleted them directly. It was doing this when I upgraded to 2.0 also.
My server is getting kinda sluggish, so I think it's just timeing out or something.

Thanks Justin,
I was actually considering Movable Type just last week. I have tried a few other systems and wordpress does seem to be the best so far (as long as you don't use the default themes ;) ).

I actually switched to WordPress 2.0 from Movable Type 3.2 and had the comment problem. I ended up going into the SQL and switching all the comments to "approved" and that got them to show up. Despite the problems you bring up with the pingbacks and trackbacks (and thanks for explaining the diference) I have to say this is a far better system then Movable Type.

MacBros,
Did you delete the files then upload or just allow the ftp app to overwrite them? Sometimes the ftp app can append the file instead of replacing it.

I get a blank white screen when I submit a post. The post gets saved but the damn thing gets annoying when you get the blank screen after posting.

If you put a link to another blog in the body of your post wordpress will attempt to alert the other blog and allow this alert to show in their comments. This is a pingback.

A trackback is similar but different and more deliberate. A trackback must be purposely attached to your blog and it seems to summarize your post better than a pingback.

I've been told that pingbacks are better by the wordpress developers but I don't see it that way. They just don't work as well as trackbacks for my purposes and as of late, I have shut pingbacks off completely. I totally disagree with the developers on this one. At least outgoing trackbacks working properly with this bugfix release.

2.0 was not nearly ready for release and cause a lot of troubles. 114 bugs were fixed for the 2.0.1 release.

If you are going to upgrade from 1.5 to 2.0.1 then realize that you are going to have to go back and hit the edit button on every post if you want them to show up under categories in your sidebar and your comments will not be counted on your posts unless you hit the edit button on them as well (they will still be there but the posts will all say "no comments").

What is the difference between a trackback and a pingback? What else annoys you about the new WordPress? It seems to work fine for me.
